While on our honeymoon, Milca and I rented a couple movies. The DVD player at the house didn’t like one of the DVD’s, which is to say that there were parental locks put on so that we couldn’t watch anything over a certain rating. I don’t think the owner did this, it was likely one of the people that stayed there. At any rate, we were restricted to VHS. The video store was decent enough, I suppose. It was a music store and a video store, so there wasn’t too many movies there. Maybe 500 titles in all, give or take. We were lucky enough to come across two that at least seemed interesting enough to try out, and we were far from disappointed.
Saved! , starring Jenna Malone, Mandy Moore, and Macaulay Culkin, was quite the bomb. It’s set in a Christian high school where all of the above are students. It’s a satire, but not at the expense of believability. So, if you ever went to a private school, specifically Christian or Catholic, this movie will have yo uin stitches. Even if you haven’t, the punches they pull at the entire born again movement, modern day Christianity, and the young people that eat this shit up will have you laughing out loud as well. I’ve heard a common complaint that people dont want to watch because they can’t stand Mandy Moore. This is understandable, and your hatred, or mild disliking, will not hinder your enjoyment of the film in any way whatsoever. Trust me.
Connie and Carla, with that chick from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and that chick from Muriel’s Wedding, is about these two women who perform stage shows, medleys of musicals and the like, who, for reasons that pertain to plot, are forced to pretend to be drag queens doing these shows. There are some mild hijinks, and this is something that some may not be able to deal with. Those aside, this movie is hilarious. I, of course, can relate to a degree, what with the crossdressing instances, but you are sure to laugh, even if you’ve only ever worn the attire of your own sex.
Rent them. Netflix them. Enjoy them.
